First day at Märket is allways a little bit confusing, you need to get used to the surroundings, facilities and people. So far we are doing well, radioamateurs have started in full force their connections to the outside world, fixing also some problems with their equipment. We lighthousekeepers do different kinds of work that lighouse offers to us.

Raimo is our hard working janitor, he handles everything from warming up the fireplaces to dishes. This is one of the most important jobs in here, one must keep the lighthouse warm, carry wood, boil water for dishes and for shower etc. Minna takes care of the cooking which is also a full time job in here. Future kitchen will be much more practical to use than this present one, but one manages quite well with a little planning. Eikka and Jori have been doing another table and new kitchen shelfs from old floor planks. It is going to be a real old fashion table, these carpenters use for instance wooden pegs to join different surfaces together. This way it should be more resistant for moisture and these Märket conditions. It would be nice to see these furnitures after ten years or more, they propably get even better looking as they get older.

Wind direction has changed to west today and it has been quite cold outside because of that. Allmost everybody else have been spending the day more inside than outside exept Eikka and Jori. In an island wind and behaviour of the sea are the most visible caracteristics and people like to talk about them and observe them. Sea water is one thing and sweet water is another: today we unfortunately discovered that our drinking water storage is very very low so we have to spare it before we get more on Saturday. That is why coffee is not available all the time and that is not a good thing if you are used to cheer up with coffee. But if you want to sleep well, there is no problem!
