The 4th season of Märket was planned to be opened on Saturday June the 5th and the first three members of the new crew, Roope, Irma and Seija arrived to Mariehamn early in the morning ready to enter the boat to Märket.
But it was already afternoon when Max and Yvonne Sjöström told that in spite of the high waves it might just be possible to land to the rocky island. After 30 minutes ride there it was, Märket, so close and yet so far. The disappointment was huge when it turned out that it would be impossible to land. The boat returned back to Eckerö and Max and Yvonne gave their charming cottage to the crew members for the night.
It was planned that a ferry loaded with building materials and a truck for moving timber and heavy items would leave from Mariehamn at 5 am. on Sunday morning. It would take at least 4 to 5 hours to get to its destination. But it was late afternoon when the ferry finally headed towards Märket bringing the rest of the crew, Ari, Pasi, Teija, Maaret and Emil, with it.
Roope, Irma and Seija left Eckerö at 7 a´clock pm. so they arrived to Märket firsrt and had just enough time to carry the food supplies to the lighthouse. After the final instructions from Max and Yvonne the lihthouse keepers were left to look aroud and get readdy to welcome the ferry. It arrived about nine a´clock.
The whole crew was now together but there was no time to associate. The hard work started immediately. The cargo had to be unloaded. Yes, there was a truck, but there was still much left for us to carry, heavy things such as glass brigs. Around 11 pm. we had a short break to eat some sallad and bread with hot tea. Then back to work again. It was past midnight, the truck was lifting its last load, then it happenen - a catastrophe. A shaft was broken. It was our luck that this essential part of the truck did not get broken until the work was succesfully nearly finished. Finally the ferry left and all lighthousekeepers went to bed exhausted.
